The presence of visual stress can manifest itself in a range of symptoms. These can include:

- Patterns in print (often described as ‘worms’ or ‘rivers’)
- Colour halos surrounding words
- Headaches or pain in the eyes whilst attempting to read
- Growing excessively tired when reading
- Perceptual distortions
